Event Calendar

Event Calendar

The Strathcona Community Council seeks to accomplish two things for the residents that choose to use it: To gather and share information that concerns the neighbourhood and To promote and plan activites that maintain and reflect the lifestyle of the residents of the neighbourhood. We’ve had an event calendar on our website for a few years, but we want to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to promote all of the great things that are happening in our community. To view some of the upcoming events that are being promoted right now, click on this link. What do we promote? Throughout the year we organize events that are organized by our active volunteer base.  These events are organized and coordinated by our executive, often collaborating with community partners.  Recent examples include the 15oth Anniversary of the Crystal Palace, our annual Screen on the Green night every September, and our most recent Co-op Congress. We are open to promoting your events though! We are currently revising our submission guidelines for events, but in the meantime, if you have something that you feel needs to be promoted in our neighbourhood or in the city, please email the details to strathconacommunitycouncil@gmail.com, and ask our President Jonathan Thierren if it can be promoted on our website calendar.  We will try our best to get your submission up in a timely manner, and to help promote it through our community email updates, and our social media...

Chocolate Egg Hunt

Chocolate Egg Hunt

Last spring, thanks to the amazing boost from Hamilton’s Chris Ecklund, we hosted our first Chocolate Egg Hunt in Victoria Park and Oxford Park.  With roughly 300 hundred children and youth who showed up hungry for chocolate, we decided that this amazing event had to keep running.  We’re happy to announce that we’ve decided to run the Chocolate Egg Hunt as an annual event. Easter weekend On Saturday, April 19th at 11:00 a.m., this year’s free Chocolate Egg Hunt will begin in Victoria Park.  Paper bags will be provided for the children to gather up their goodies in, but if you have a festive basket at home that you would like to use instead then by all means bring it along.  Each hunt site will be divided into two separate areas, one for toddlers and one for older children so as to give the wee ones a fair shot at some loot. Parent volunteers: The Strathcona Elementary School’s Community, Character & Caring Committee will be holding a Victoria Park clean-up night on Thursday, April 17th in order to help ensure that the park will be in great shape for all of the children to go off on their search.  We’ll have volunteers spread through the park on Saturday morning testing out their best Peter Cottontail impersonations as they spread the stash of chocolate eggs. If you are interested in giving a hand please email us: strathconacommunitycouncil@gmail.com so we can organize our volunteers...
Strathcona Presents: Co-op Congress

Strathcona Presents: Co-op Congress

Have you noticed the emerging role that co-ops are playing in our community?  Sure, you might shop at MEC or do your banking at First Ontario, but do you know the difference between a worker co-op and a consumer co-op?  And what motivates people to start a co-op instead of just a private enterprise when they want to start a business?  Think you might want to do the same? You are cordially invited by the Strathcona Community Council to our Co-op Congress on Thursday, March 20th, 7 pm at Erskine Presbyterian Church (19 Pearl Street North).  Come out and listen to the inspirational stories behind three exciting businesses making a difference right here in Strathcona.   Guest speakers include Graham Cubitt, President and Co-founder of The Mustard Seed Co-op, Abram Bergen, President and Founder of THAAT, and Jason Hammond, President of Community CarShare. Come shake off the winter doldrums (it’s the first day of spring after all!) and reconnect with friends and neighbours.  Fairtrade coffee and sweet local treats will be available.  What more could you possibly want?!  See you there!...
